I love this poem by Jane Kenyon and the many virtues it illustrates: perspective, wisdom, gratitude, awareness and so on:
I got out of bed
on two strong legs.
It might have been
otherwise. I ate
cereal, sweet
milk, ripe, flawless
peach. It might
have been otherwise.
I took the dog uphill
to the birch wood.
All morning I did
the work I love.
At noon I lay down
with my mate. It might
have been otherwise.
We ate dinner together
at a table with silver
candlesticks. It might
have been otherwise.
I slept in a bed
in a room with paintings
on the walls, and
planned another day
just like this day.
But one day, I know,
it will be otherwise.
This was the first time I’d read this poem by Jane Kenyon, and its vivid imagery immediately made me feel grateful for all the things I take for granted on a daily basis.
Thank you for the reminder to appreciate the arts as one of the ways in which we can connect to each other.
Yes, Rose! Taking people or things for granted is near the top of my personal list of the “Seven Deadly Sins!”
Often we forget: There is Always , Always something to be Grateful for❤️
Yes, Chris! God help me to always, always remember that truth.
So good to be reminded. Thank you Artie ❤️
