In our culture, in our day and age, we don’t hear the word “virtue” much. Don’t let the word throw you off or send you away! Other words for “virtue” include “values,” “morals,” “principles,” “fruits of the Spirit.” Think of the virtues as building blocks on a foundation of Love. If it is true that “God is Love,” then the virtues are the very nature and character of God. The virtues are the very nature and character at the center of you and of me. We get side-tracked by life, but the virtues are our “innate” being, deep down inside. When we begin to believe that, or at least hope that it is true; we draw on that nature and call it out, contemplate it and practice it. The virtues then begin to become not what I “do,” but who I am.
